Filming "Of Life, I Want to Live"

Waking at 4am on my boat Faith..
Deep night fog makes my one-oared, standing row of Jimbo like an Italian character in the prologue to a Murder, She Wrote novel..
I row him down the line of moored boats, and, completely out of character, smile and wave at the skipper of a trimaran I have never before seen..
At the shore I giggle boyishly at my successful dinghy leap over wave onto the sand without a drop of water to wet my boot.

Car it out the 8..
It is December, yet the predawn Cleveland National "Forest" is merely crisp, promising a hot, sun-drenched desert-like day.
With an apple for a bong and a smile in my heart, I strap my guitar, tripods and cameras to my back and begin to hike..

Halfway up I'm nearly out of water (if you've seen the video, you've seen some dancing) and, like an over-heated motor, must lie in the shade to cool.
From here its rations and ditch the guitar..

Several times I nearly turn around for want of a drop..
But the summit calls me..

Here's a link to the Lawson Peak slideshow and Lawson Peak photoset on Flickr.

Of Life, I Want to Live (Song & Video Release!)

Releasing a song & video each month is a chance for you to hear music that transmogrifies (as most Bullets in a Burning Box songs do over time). This, for me, is the ultimate liberation. Just release... With the distant opportunity to change, re-arrange, alter lyrics, add bass guitar or follow whatever yellow-brick road materializes within my tumultous head.

Also, it allows a month of fresh air to flutter the lyrics. There is something about being an artist, in that, pieces of my current emotional milieu stir themselves into the present song or art piece.. (Writing more than one song per month creates bland, identical twins.) The month (okay.. sometimes two months) allows wide soul space to draw in all chi and exhale some gargantuan dragon breath.

This month's breath is called "Of Life, I Want to Live."

Watch the video here (free download available).

Storm Day!

Storm day!
The wind is like a circling, fierce wolf.
White caps tip the bay like a Chinese army in a fog.
My neighbor's dinghy has nearly become forfeit to the sea.
Faith rides like a see-saw (sp?)
Yours truly quelled the temptation to expose, then pile the generator beneath outdoor pillows.
Its a querrellous, primal day.
On the boat.
Meditate your way to me, Daedalus.

  3. Hang a left on Lyons Valley Road
  4. South about 5 miles to around mile marker 13
  5. Park in the gravelly turn-out for a dirt road heading uphill to your right

boulders. glee.
part of wisdom (and sensibility) beckon.
they chant "turn around."
but to capitulate to fear is passé.
part of the past, eh?
so on we trudge.
a dark hill, darker still.
cat eyes ain't human.
stink of fear.
on, on.
twist up, back.
stumble.
like an infant on fours.
through the rivulets.
up the packed dust.
avalanches of foot-sized rock.
scrambling in the dark, dark.
moon still a quarter day beneath the earth.
just the twilight stars and one.
spear tree in hand.
again one stands.
and ascends.
switching back, back in the dark, dark.
singing yo, ho, a bottle of rum.
to frighten what doesn't lurk in the bushes.
their scratchy leaves silent.
even the song swallowed by the heavy night.
month it all turns brown.
hot oregon.
month of the dead.
hot california.
last twist.
and the ridge breaks.
starts to fall.
and the peaks come out to play.
trails intersecting.
lawson leaming.
calling.
whispering.
it, so sexy.
it, colored in a world of night.
so touchable, backlit.
to the summit.
(beyond all fear.)
beyond a recognition of what was.
over these boulders.
bleeding from these limbs.
leveraging the cracks.
all weight on one point.
bouncing in stride.
pausing to acclimatize.
the scent of dirt.
vessels overhead.
shadows born.
shadows die.
circling the peak.
rounding on the western side.
jaw agape.
laughter.
skipping.
gripping one last crack.
up through.
into the cave.
groping in the dark.
sky bright keyholes.
climb straight up.
out to the summit.
beyond the summit, to the true top.
hot night.
sexy peak beneath one's sleep.
like a true friend.
like a lover.
carve our initials into lawson peak.
yo, ho, a bottle of rum.

An Exit (Album Release!)

An Exit is an evolutionary blend of distortion and danceability. It began as an experimental mix of drum 'n' bass beats with Afear's heavy guitars and distorted vocals.. The tempos have remained unaltered (mind you). Though, the vibe -- you will find -- is bent.

An Exit features two remixes of "Abaddon Threads" from friends:

low distortion unit
Paris (France). Makers of the soundtrack to "Alone in the Dark : The New Nightmare" (2001), they are Thierry Th Desseaux & Lucas_a. This remix is so very European and brutal!

Brokin Sticks
Medford, Oregon, USA. Brokin Sticks are a hip-hop group featuring the lyrics and beats of Kjohnn and Catalyst. Kjohnn and I grew up together in Oregon.. We chased girls, splashed in puddles and drove cars too fast. This remix sounds eerie and hip-hop-ish.

The track list:
1. Abaddon Threads (Low Distortion Unit) 3:30
2. Acetylene in Matryoshka (Burn) 3:10
3. Acannabinum Unfold (Blossom) 3:23
4. Absinthium Flow Ring (Become Human) 3:32
5. Abaddon Threads (Unrestrained) 3:59
6. Abaddon Threads (Brokin Sticks) 1:33

Note: the album originally included remixes of "Aarons Rod" and "Aepypterus Red H." However, I felt the overall quality/feeling of these particular remixes were sub-par. Therefore (rather than dull your ears) enjoy these creamy, top-quality, best six tracks.

Listen and/or download here.

Album Review "A Genius in Schizophrenia"

NINa of Fabryka Industrial Rock wrote a review of Afear.
"The songs .. touch some other mind spots and bring other impressions, kind of schizophrenic aspects but there's a genius in schizophrenia sometimes."

"This fight amongst the vocals, guitars, bass and beats create an original and well composed mixture. Nathanael Matthias Weiss sings (or rather recites) the lyrics in a intentionally infantile way giving the songs a bit psychotic vibe. There is a bit of drum'n'bass beat as well as some similarities to the sound of NIN and the 90s grunge or hard rock bands."

Confronting My Anima

From Wikipedia:
"The anima is one of the most significant autonomous complexes of all. It manifests itself by appearing as figures in dreams as well as by influencing a man's interactions with women and his attitudes toward them, and vice versa for females and the animus. Jung said that confronting one's shadow self is an "apprentice-piece", while confronting one's anima is the masterpiece. Jung viewed the anima process as being one of the sources of creative ability."

Abaddon Threads Lyrics

Abaddon Threads
uh.BAD.n thred.s

You were the
Embodiment
Of what was
Real
I am
Lost
Without you
My fear vies
Rights to decree
Freedom
From your
Comfortability
And I am lost

Circling
Self mazes
Questioning
Your authority
Over my uncomfort
My growth
My yearning
For life
Existential
Experiencing
You and me
Our physical link
Has torn at me
And begged me
To drop
Sink my blanket
Watch it fade
Torn and dropping
Drop

Slowly
Pieces of myself
I find, I had lost
In self denial
I rise
Unperfected
Shivering
With eyes of an infant
Pure in focus

Zen

A quote from the menu at Casa Zen in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica:
"Zen is not a religion, nor a dogma, nor a belief. Neither is Zen a search, an investigation, or a philosophy. The fundamental basis for the practice of Zen is that everything is as it should be, nothing is missing. In this exact moment, everything is perfect."
